Moral Focus Spotlight

 
It’s important as educators to model our expectations to our students. As we look at the Classroom Framework in the competency of Classroom Culture and the indicator of Student Behavior to be exemplary it states, “Teacher models Moral Focus virtues in their words and actions.”

Every month on the blog, I will provide you with a resource that pertains to ways that you can model our Moral Focus virtues. During the month of January, Perseverance is the Moral Focus virtue and the 3-5 wing focuses on “Endurance.” I read an article that identifies steps that teachers can take to help students build persistence. In the article, Teaching Persistence: How to Build Student Stamina, one of the steps was Model Persistence. J

“Most learners love to hear personal stories from their teachers. Telling your learners about your weekend plumbing project that didn’t go as planned – and how you got through it and completed it – is a great way to help learners see that everyone feels like giving up sometimes. It also models for them how to overcome those feelings and reach a goal – without coming off as preachy.”

You might not talk about your plumbing project, but any way that you can demonstrate endurance (learning new curriculum, planning a lesson or activity, etc.) could be powerful to your students! Don’t forget that we will be focusing on Classroom Culture the week we return from break. You can schedule an observation and/or bring evidence to your O3. I look forward to meeting with everyone.

Classroom Framework Evidence

Beginning in January, I will begin to provide a more structured way of providing evidence for the different competencies of the Classroom Framework. During our O3 meetings, for the remainder of the school year, we will focus on a different indicator each week. See the schedule below. 

Week 1: Classroom Culture
Week 2: Planning
Week 3: Teaching
Week 4: Assessing

Each week we will examine the selected competency and its indicators in order to determine your current level and desired next steps. You can bring evidence to your O3 and/or schedule an observation to support or increase your current rating. However, you are not required to provide evidence because one of the benefits of the new Classroom Framework is that teachers are able to work at their own pace and make decisions about their own professional development.

As I stated above, we will follow the same schedule each month focusing on a different competency each week. For the month of January, begin to collect your evidence and/or begin to think about if you want me to observe your instruction.
