Team Goal

Thank you for the discussions around determining our team goal. At our grade-level meeting this week, don’t forget to come prepare with examples of how you “provide students an opportunity to be leaders of their learning” and which competency and indicators it addresses on the Classroom Framework. We will use the examples to finalize our team goal.

Grade-level Meeting

On Tuesday, I will be spending the entire day leading New Teacher PD. So, I need to reschedule 3rd-5th grade-level meetings to Monday. Please plan accordingly. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but your Tuesday will be free! J

Moral Focus Spotlight

Character building is just as critical to students’ growth and development as reading or math and you are in a great position to nurture positive character, one virtue at a time. Encouraging kids to be thankful for what they have is a positive message that will serve them well their whole lives. You can nurture student self-esteem and help build a more positive classroom environment.

November is the perfect time of year to explore the moral focus virtue of gratitude because it’s the official season of thanks. Although, Thanksgiving provides the perfect reason for presenting lessons on gratitude, you can model this virtue all school year.
In the article Gratitude Activities for the Classroom, Vicki Zakrzewski provides several “ideas on how to bring gratitude into the classroom with some easy-to-implement activities, many of which can be adapted to fit any grade level.” These can be done with minimal disruption to instructional time. I have identified two below that I really like. Please click here for more.
Gratitude Spies. Play the “Spying for Gratitude” game. At the beginning of the day, have each child choose the name of another student out of a hat without revealing the name. Each student spends the day “spying” on his or her chosen person and then shares one thing that he or she is grateful for about that person during an end-of-the-day circle
Gratitude Surprise Sticky Notes. Give each student one or more sticky notes to write something they’re grateful for about another person in the school community. Then have the students “deliver” the sticky notes by placing them where the person will see it, e.g., a locker, a phone, a cleaning cart.

Achievement Boards

Achievement boards are due November 11. Here are a few reminders as you prepare your board:

·        What Teachers CAN DO:
o   Display work with a student’s name and grades before grades have been entered into a grade book.
o   Display anonymous student work showing a grade, corrections, or other markings. You may use student identification numbers so long as you make reasonable efforts to maintain anonymity.

·        What Teachers CANNOT DO:
o   CANNOT disclose education records (including student addresses and/or telephone numbers) to other students.

o   CANNOT post students’ final grades or grade point averages, including giving access to the teacher’s grade book.

Basically, if the student work has a score on it, take off the student's name before displaying it. If the student work does not have a score on it, it is acceptable to post the student's name.

Make sure to include the following when posting your achievement board:
1.      Title
2.     Objective written as an I Can statement
3.     Standard (Common Core, NGSS, etc.)
4.     Student work
5.     Specific feedback for each student
